Sustainable Forestry Education
Landowners - Loggers - Foresters

Goals

  • Provide needed continuing educational opportunities for loggers, foresters and landowners.
  • Improve the level of communication between loggers, foresters and landowners to enhance the sustainability of Michigan's forestlands.

Background

MSU Extension (MSUE) has been engaged in a major effort to train loggers in Michigan under the Sustainable Forestry Education (SFE) Logger Education Program. In 1996, MSU received over $300,000 from the Michigan Forest Resource Alliance and cooperating forest industries to conduct a 3-year educational program for loggers focusing on ecology and proper silviculture of Michigan forests, forest water quality best management practices, and OSHA/MIOSHA logging safety practices. To date, over 2,300 people have completed the entire SFE Core Training Program. Additionally, over 3,000 people have participated in some phase of the core program. Although loggers and foresters have been the primary audience for the program, there is also a continuing interest among private landowners and other parties. Having landowners attend is worthwhile, as loggers get to hear first-hand many of the perspectives of landowners concerning logging and forest management.

Year 2009 Program Direction

As in recent years, the SFE Logger Ed Program has a reduced schedule, with a set of sessions in the spring and again in the fall. The core training program will be offered 4 times over the course of the year. New sessions include information on the emerging bioeconomy and biomass markets. A schedule of training sessions for the 2009 calendar year is listed below.

Call toll free (866-339-1587) or 989-344-3263, or e-mail harwood9@msu.edu, for reservations.

Listed sessions that are shaded in green are located in the Upper Peninsula.
